Chaudhary Chhotu Ram
Sir Chhotu Ram(1881-1945) was one of the most prominent pre-partition politicians in Punjab and an ideologue of the Jat peasantry and a champion of its interests. He was born on 24 November 1881 in Ghari Sampla in Rohtak district in Jat Gotra Ohlan family. He was associated with organizations representing peasant interests like the Zamindar League and the Unionist Party (after resigning from the Congress in 1920). He was one of the founders of the Unionist Party (along with Sir Sikander Hyat Khan). The Unionists ruled Punjab for its first two decades of (limited) democracy.
Baba Sohan Singh Bhakna
Baba Sohan Singh Bhakna (22 December 1870 – 21 December 1968) was a prominent Indian revolutionary and the founding president of the Ghadar Party, an organization formed by Indian immigrants in North America with the objective of overthrowing British rule in India. Born in the village of Khutbad in Amritsar district (Punjab), he became one of the earliest and most influential leaders of the Ghadar movement, mobilizing expatriate Indians—especially Punjabi Sikh workers—to support armed struggle for independence.
Banda Singh Bahadur
Banda Singh Bahadur (16 October 1670 – 9 June 1716) was a legendary Sikh military commander and the first Sikh leader to establish a sovereign rule over significant parts of Punjab. Born as Lachhman Dev in Rajouri (present-day Jammu & Kashmir), he later became a bairagi ascetic named Madho Das before being transformed into Banda Singh Bahadur by Guru Gobind Singh in 1708. He was eventually captured by the Mughals, tortured, and executed in Delhi in 1716, becoming one of the most revered martyrs in Sikh history.
Ajit Singh
Sardar Ajit Singh (23 February 1881 – 15 August 1947) was a prominent Indian nationalist, independence activist, and one of the early leaders of the anti-British movement in Punjab. Born in Khatkar Kalan, Jalandhar district, he was the uncle of Shaheed Bhagat Singh and a leading voice against oppressive colonial policies such as the Punjab Colonization Act (1906). Ajit Singh organized the Pagri Sambhal Jatta Movement, mobilizing peasants against unjust land revenue laws. His revolutionary activities led to frequent arrests, forcing him into long years of exile across multiple countries, including Iran, Switzerland, Brazil, and Italy. Despite hardships, he continued international advocacy for India’s freedom.
Maharaja Ranjit Singh
Maharaja Ranjit Singh (13 November 1780 – 27 June 1839) was the founder and ruler of the Sikh Empire in northwestern India. Born in Gujranwala (now in Pakistan), he belonged to the Sukerchakia misl. Through strategic diplomacy and military consolidation, he unified the Sikh misls and established a strong, secular, and efficiently governed empire with Lahore as its capital. Known as the “Sher-e-Punjab” (Lion of Punjab), Ranjit Singh built a formidable army—the Khalsa Fauj—modernized with the help of European officers. Under his rule, the empire expanded across Punjab, Kashmir, Multan, Peshawar, and parts of Afghanistan.
